PTC Buys Mathsoft (WorldCAD Access + CADalyst)

[PTC Press Release, WorldCAD comment + article at CADalyst]

So, will we soon see direct integration between MathCAD + Pro/ENGINEER? Just this week we've begun planning a MathCAD>Pro/E design generator: following on from Excel + Web-based versions... (in fact I'll talk about Design Automation at PTC/USER 2006 - more soon)

To me, MathCAD's key feature has been the ability to show calculations just as you'd write them on paper (as opposed to spreadsheets which have cells + long complex-looking formulae...) - and the way you can easily add notes, etc.. to the page. If you could drive a CAD model directly from a calcs-page, imagine the power unleashed!! Then go a stage further + add 2-direction transfer, and FEA too... possibilities are endless.

Here's hoping that PTC/Mathsoft make the CAD interface open, rather than closing it as a Granite-only solution... but what are the chances of that happening??

What package has integrated FEA and rigid body calculations so that I could design a bar stool, and easily determine:

a) if it is top-heavy, so that drunken customers could easily tip it over, and

b) if a fat person sat on it, which part would give way first.

Also, are there such things as libraries of materials that I could specify, which the FEA would take into account, so that a bar stool made of PVC would bend differently from a bar stool made of tungsten?

Thank you very much.

hmmm interesting questions... what CAD package are you using for design?? Most FEA packages will include the features you mention. If you're using Pro/E, the main one is Pro/Mechanica, but Ansys + MSC.Marc + others are available.

I am completely empty and shallow. I use no CAD package at all now. I would like to buy one for recreational use, instead of watching American Idol.

Thank you for your reply. I will research Pro/Mechanica.
